Duck Hollow / Lower Frick Park Hike
Details
See Pittsburgh’s rivers, woods, history, and progress
6-mile hike (approximately) starting out from Duck Hollow [Duck Hollow neighborhood] parking lot, following the Mon river upstream for 1.5 miles. At that point we’ll see the historic Carrie Furnace [Carrie_Furnace-wiki] (from a distance) and some local graffiti artwork. Then we’ll follow mountain bike trails back along the ridge parallel to the Mon until we get into lower Frick Park. We’ll see the newly developed area on the old slag heap where a 15-acre solar panel installation is in progress [From-slag-heap-to-solar-field]. Continuing on the mountain bike trails we’ll work our way to the impressive new Squirrel Hill Tunnel/376 bridge replacement project [Parkway East bridge replacement] which we’ll see up close. From there take the main 9-mile run creek trail back to the parking lot, then follow the Duck Hollow trail down and back along the Mon in the downstream direction. I would rate this as an easy hike but expect some hills.
