Deadmans Hill to Ampthill 11.5 mile circular walk

Details

Details
An 12 mile two woods walk taking in part of the Greensands Ridge Walk, starting from Deadmans Hill through Maulden Wood then over farmland to King's Wood and on to Ampthill Park were there are public toilets and cafe (outside seating only) where we will have our break, returning via Maulden Village and Maulden Wood.
The A6 layby is infamous for the 1960's A6 Hanratty murder case.

What to Expect
An 12 mile walk mostly on good paths and farm tracks with some minor roads, we will keep to field boundaries as far as possible, but the route does have a number of field crossings which may have been ploughed and or muddy and slippery, some of the paths may also be muddy and or overgrown in places. There will be rolling hills with a few short but steep climbs and descents, the total ascent for the walk is around 850ft (260m). We will maintain a pace of just over 3mph (5km/hr) throughout the walk, i.e. walking each mile in under 20 minutes.

This is quite a long walk but it is not too challenging and is suitable for anyone with a good standard of walking fitness.

If you are a first timer please read the 'About us...' section on the homepage before signing up for this walk, ensuring appropriate fitness and suitability.

If you can't make the walk please change your RSVP in plenty of time to allow others to attend. Anyone making a habit of changing their RSVP the night before or being a no show will be removed from the club.

The Finer Points

Walk Starts: 09:30

Parking: Free, in the large layby on the northbound side of the A6 dual carriageway at Deadmans Hill, 1.5miles north along the A6 from the A507 / A6 roundabout at Clophill.
If you are travelling from the north it may be easier to go down to the A6 / A507 roundabout then back up rather than trying to cross the dual carriageway to access the layby. Maulden Wood, Haynes West End MK45 3UZ
