Details

A great walk with some spectacular views over the Dunstable Downs, which are part of the Chiltern Hills and the highest point in Bedfordshire. As well as a visit to the Whipsnade Tree Cathedral, we will be following part of the ancient Icknield Way, passing Prehistoric burial sites, Roman ruins and a Medieval Motte and Bailey castle. A real walk through history in this ancient landscape.

What to expect.
A 12 mile circular walk, mainly on good tracks, some may be a bit muddy in places. There will be a few hills to tackle with some steep climbs, total ascent 1100ft. The pace will be just over 3mph throughout the walk.

This walk is quite challenging and is suitable for anyone with a good standard of walking fitness.

The Details:-

Start point: Dunstable Downs Chilterns Gateway Centre Whipsnade Road, Dunstable, Bedfordshire, LU6 2GY.

Sat Nav: use LU6 2GY via the B4541 west of Dunstable.

Time: The Walk WILL START at 9.30 am. Pease arrive early to give yourself enough time to get your gear together and to book in with the walk leader.

Charge: There is a £3:00 charge for the walk to cover admin fees for the organiser.

Payment is by cash. card or contactless on the day

Parking: There is ample parking space at the Chilterns Gateway Centre but there is a £3.50 charge (at time of writing). This is a National Trust car park so it is free if you are a member.

Distance: 12 miles.

Time: Approx 4.5 hrs (includes stoppages)

Refreshments: There will be a break at about the halfway point so bring a drink and a snack. There is also a café at the Gateway Centre at the end of the walk.

Public Toilets: There are toilets available in the Chilterns Gateway Centre at the start and end of the walk.

Hiking and hillwalking are activities with a danger of personal injury. Participants in these activities should be aware of, accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.
