What we’re about
Hey it’s Rudo! Shoshinsha - Beginner Japanese is my newest meetup - I’ve been organizing various Japanese and English meetups for about 10 years in Toronto.
This group focuses on people who are new to Japanese and/or are still beginners. We hold language exchanges most Saturday mornings at a food court in North York.
Since this is an exchange, we of course also welcome Japanese native speakers who want to practice their English! We provide some worksheets and topics so even if you’re shy you can still learn something, make friends, and have a good time.
You can watch the video below to get a feel for the meetup. Please also follow us on Instagram and feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

For beginners! Learn and practice Japanese through games and activities in a fun and friendly environment.
We welcome those who are brand new to Japanese (only a few words), up until beginner (N4 level)*. Your English should also be native or near-native as well, since you will also teach English to your new Japanese friends! 🇨🇦 x 🇯🇵
What we do different: Our sessions are more like a classroom!📚
- Orientation for every new member!🎓
- Every member is given a personalized notebook on their first visit. 📔You’re encouraged to bring this every time and to take lots of notes!✏️
- I prepare games, activities and worksheets every session. 🎲📝 You can earn bonuses by bringing your own materials each week as well (Like textbooks, books, journals, notes, etc.)! 🎁
- Like a teacher, I’m also available to answer questions about English or Japanese during the meetup. 💬
Each session is $15 per event for English speakers, and we have a monthly membership option as well, which you can read more about here -> https://rudo.to/school
Otherwise, we take cash or credit/debit card payments during the event. 💳
Once you arrive at the food court, please look for our group (usually at the far corner). If you are running late, please comment or let us know directly. Please also avoid last minute cancellations if possible as well, since we plan the event with you in mind!
The first 15 minutes of the event are also reserved for hanging out, getting coffee, etc. so please consider supporting the venue and purchasing a coffee from A&W or Second Cup, etc! ☕️
Read this far? Thanks! Hope to see you at our event!
*N5 and N4 are grades from the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test). N5 and N4 are considered beginner, N3 intermediate, and N2 and N1 are advanced.
