Hike the Muktuk Marston Trail

Details
Location: Muktuk Marston Trailhead, Arctic Valley, Anchorage AK
Date & Time: 8/23/25 at 9am AKDT
Difficulty: Moderate (about 5 miles, steady elevation gain)
Duration: 3–4 hours, including breaks
### About the Hike
Join us for a scenic trek along the Muktuk Marston Trail, named in honor of General Marston, a key figure in Alaska’s military history. This route takes us through alpine meadows, open ridgelines, and sweeping views of the Chugach Mountains.
Expect a steady uphill climb with rewarding panoramas once we reach higher ground. Along the way, we may see wildflowers, marmots, and, if lucky, Dall sheep in the distance.
This hike is a great way to enjoy Alaska’s late summer beauty while connecting with fellow adventurers.
### What to Bring
- Good hiking boots or trail shoes
- Layers (weather in the mountains changes quickly)
- Water (at least 1–2 liters) & snacks/lunch
- Trekking poles (optional but helpful on the descent)
- Bug spray, bear spray/bells/horn, and sunscreen
- Well behaved dogs welcome
### Meeting Point
We’ll meet at the Muktuk Marston Trailhead parking lot (Arctic Valley side) at 9:00am AKDT. Look for Laura S. in Green Subaru Outback and grey and rust colored backpack.
### Important Notes
- This hike is moderate — please be comfortable with a steady uphill climb and 6 miles round trip. A challenge for beginners and feels great for intermediate hikers.
- As always in Alaska, carry bear spray and hike prepared.
- This is a rain-or-shine event (we’ll only cancel for severe weather).
- This is also a no-person-left-behind event.
