Political Psychology - A talk by Howard Lavine

Details

You've seen the commercials, the debates, and the ample news coverage of the upcoming election. Join us Thursday November 1st, just days before one of the most contentious mid-term elections in American history, for a presentation on political psychology from Howard Lavine.

Howard Lavine is Arleen C. Carlson Professor of Political Science and Psychology at the University of Minnesota and Director of the Center for the Study of Political Psychology.

His work centers on the psychological underpinnings of mass political behavior. He is the author of Open versus Closed: Personality, Identity and the Politics of Redistribution (Cambridge University Press, 2017), The Ambivalent Partisan: How Critical Loyalty Promotes Democracy (Oxford University Press, 2012, which won the Robert E. Lane and David O. Sears Book Awards), and Political Psychology (Sage, 2010).

Howard's work has also been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, and programs such as Real Time with Bill Maher and MPR.

Professor Lavine will discuss how the rise of personality and social identity as the basis of political orientation has realigned our politics. What are the nature and origins of political polarization in the mass public? Are we more divided by issues than in previous decades, or does our current disagreement reflect something deeper, more psychological?

Doors open at 6:00pm for networking, presentation starts promptly at 6:30pm. Additional details forthcoming.

Space is limited for this event, so RSVP early to secure a spot.
