With the breathtaking economic changes happening in China over the past thirty years or so, social norms and values have also undergone changes. Although Chinese women enjoy more freedom and independence than ever before, higher education and lifestyle choices have brought on unforeseen pressures and constraints. This month’s Idea Salon topic is "leftover women" (剩女), "an urban, professional female in her late twenties or older who is still single" (Leta Hong Fincher, Leftover Women: The Resurgence of Gender Inequality in China (Zed Books, 2014)). For a well-rounded discussion, we invite Chinese women to join us and discuss their opinions and/or experiences on the topic as well as foreigners with an outside perspective of marriage and also their experiences in China.
About the speaker/discussion leader: As we are inviting several women to speak on this topic, the discussion with be moderated by Kristin Johnson, a phd candidate in Chinese Politics at Renmin University and business owner with over ten years of experience in Beijing.
Cost: 50RMB/person (includes a glass of wine and snacks to get the brain working)
Language: Mostly in English with minimal Chinese translations
Please RSVP with Kristin at 13439992008.
