Talks

It's time to change
Sometimes we find ourselves at points of no progress in our professional careers. We do not recognize ourselves in the work we do in our day-to-day lives. We are not happy doing tasks to which we dedicate a large part of our lives.
I was at that point when I decided to take charge of the situation and seek a change. I was willing to face being uncomfortable and all the consequences of leaving the safe environment in which I found myself.
In this talk, I will tell you about my journey from being a Testing Manager to returning to my origins as a Tester, in a profession that has changed so much in the last 15 years. It has not only meant changing companies but also working in a language that is not my mother tongue.

Speaker: Julia Maria Duran Muñoz
I’ve been working in IT for more than 18 years, of which more than 16 I have been in Testing. I’ve recently turned my professional career around, leaving management tasks and returning to Testing, which is my passion!!

Being a volunteer organizer of the European Testing Conference as part of a multidisciplinary, multicultural team, distributed over various time zones and collaborating in a language which I don’t speak natively gave me a new perspective on where I wanted to take my professional career.

The 11 Steps in My A11y Journey
Have you ever wondered how accessible the application you're working on is? Do you know how to find out how (in)accessible it is? Where do you even start with getting buy-in from your team to fix it? I was in this situation 5 months ago. I joined a new team. I knew our mobile app was not accessible. I knew we needed to fix it but the task seemed massive. In this talk, we'll explore the 11 steps I took with my team to building accessibility in within 3 months. We'll look at

  • How to frame the proposal to your team to do the work

  • Ways to break the approach down into manageable-sized pieces of work

  • Why we chose the user journeys we worked on

By the end of the talk you will:

  • Have the resources to propose accessibility work in your own team
  • Know how to advocate for people who might not be your users.....yet
  • Be able to explain the importance of building accessibility into your products

Speaker: Heather Reid
Heather spent 3.5 years in software testing and development roles before spending 5 years as a community manager for the Ministry of Testing community. Now, back in a hands-on testing role, she's using all of the experience gained over the past 9 years to drive changes in her organisation. Heather likes a good whiskey and a good curry but definitely not together!

Getting Automated tests in the pipeline
According to the DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA), high-performing organisations release multiple times per day with a lower change failure rate; test automation can be a key component in achieving these twin aims. How do we go about introducing automated tests to a CI/CD pipeline that will provide the right level of test coverage while also not impacting throughput?

Two years ago, we were already releasing multiple times per day but were missing this valuable test coverage; now we have developer-friendly test automation that supports the twin aims above. However, we can have problems when adding tests to a pipeline - including the potential for being flaky, hard to understand, slow, and untrustworthy.

Join me as I discuss the steps and approaches taken to get the tests included, anticipating problems such as these and how they were addressed so that you too can have quick, reliable test automation in your pipeline

Speaker: Hugh McCamphill
Hugh is an experienced test professional, working in differing testing and test automation leadership roles; He is currently working as a Test Lead with Glofox
