Join us for an evening of InnerSource, 3D, Open Data and Christmassy Jamaican fayre at Farset Labs, with thanks to Windrush Cafe (https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g186470-d5555106-Reviews-Windrush_Island_Cafe-Belfast_Northern_Ireland.html) for serving up our buffet! Gluten free and vegetarian options will be available.

Speakers:

How We Started Our InnerSource Journey - Columb Duffy - Senior Team Manager, Allstate NI

InnerSource applies the lessons of Open Source to all software development [https://paypal.github.io/InnerSourceCommons/], reducing silos and providing a better environment for developers, still compatible with business constraints. Paypal, Ericsson, Bosch and other institutions have already looked to this approach.

Columb will give an introduction to ANI's journey in getting started with bringing this in-house. If you are keen to use open source practices in your job and don't know how to approach the suggestion, this is great opportunity to get some ideas!

Blender for 3D Game Development - Mal Duffin - VR & 3D specialist

Blender is a leading open source 3D development platform, used to develop Big Buck Bunny (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1254207/), other popular animated shorts, and countless 3D scenes. However, it also has game development features, bringing interactivity to a 3D world.

Mal has worked for many years on developing 3D games and applications. Often spotted around Farset Labs with an Oculus Rift or Vive, he will be taking us back to 3D principles, showing us how Blender is capable of getting your game idea up and running!

Unnatural Disasters: Combining Open Data and Open Source within an ODNI4EDU Project - Phil Weir - Flax & Teal Limited

Encouraging developer engagement, an OpenDataNI (https://www.opendatani.gov.uk/) Challenge was launched earlier this year, and is supporting two education-related projects to completion, one run by Neueda and one by Flax & Teal Limited. ODNI have had a busy and productive year helping NI public sector bring useful, clean, clearly-licensed data onto a standard platform.

Phil, of Flax & Teal, is helping school students understand the impact of natural disasters, by simulating earthquakes, volcanos and other events in a local setting, with open data providing essential context. He will provide a sneak peak into this fully open source, open data project.
