**Introduction to Open-Source Science (OSSci) [5']**

* Abstract: Open-Source Science (OSSci) is a new NumFOCUS initiative – launched in July 2022 in partnership with IBM – that aims to accelerate scientific research by improving the ways open source software in science gets done (built, used, funded, sustained, recognized, etc.). OSSci connects scientists, OSS developers and other stakeholders to share best practices, identify common pain points, and explore solutions together. This lightning talk will provide a brief overview of OSSci’s activities to date, our plans for 2024, and how you can get involved.

* Abstract: The EU AI Act puts some constraints on the use of AI for various different use cases. Especially in areas like life sciences, ensuring strict principles when implementing AI models are mandatory for remaining compliant. We'll explain how to use existing MLOps practices to meet these requirements and enable the use of AI technologies while keeping the consumer's wellbeing in mind.

**An innovative approach for solving the Protein Folding problem using Open Source Qiskit [15']**

* Abstract: Protein folding is half a century old problem of biology. Understanding protein structures and enzymes plays a critical role in target based drug design and innovating novel enzymes. Classical methods face challenges in generating extensive conformational samplings, making Quantum Computing based approaches advantageous. In this session we first introduce Quantum Computing and Qiskit, its Open Source SDK on top of Python. Next, we tell how the problem can transformed into a representation that is appropriate for solving it with Open Source Qiskit, and compare the results delivered by the proprietary CPLEX software.
