Gravel Ride, Ochoco National Forest 38 miles, 3,700 feet of gain
Details
Ride McKay Creek Lollipop With Us
Big Ochoco views, quiet roads, and a route that just keeps getting better as it unfolds.
McKay Creek Lollipop is a Central Oregon classic—rolling out from ranchland into the Ochocos with a mix of smooth pavement, forest gravel, and a few rougher stretches to keep things interesting. This is the full lollipop: ~38 miles and ~3,700 ft of climbing.
A ride that builds as it goes—starting mellow, then settling into longer climbs, bigger views, and a rewarding finish.
The plan:
- We’ll roll at the posted time and enjoy opening miles through farm country, passing the old McKay Creek schoolhouse near the start.
- The route then climbs toward Harvey Gap in two steady steps—more sustained than punchy, a good place to find your rhythm.
Along the way, look for:
- Basalt spires and the Twin Pillars
- Expansive ridgelines along the Wildcat Caldera
- Possible views toward Mt. Jefferson on a clear day
Surface mix:
- Pavement early
- Classic Ochoco gravel climbing
- A rougher third sector (embedded rock / cobble depending on conditions)
- You’ll also ride sections of Summit Wagon Road, a historic route across the region
The reward:
- Big, open views
- Long ridge riding
- A fast descent back toward the start
The vibe:
- A consistent, steady effort
- Riders may naturally settle into smaller groups based on pace
- Occasional regrouping for a few minutes as it makes sense
- A “find your rhythm and enjoy the space” kind of day
A few notes:
- The third gravel sector is the most demanding—ride heads-up
- Some sections may be rutted or rough
- Remote with limited cell service
- No services—plan accordingly

Why do we charge for rides?
Running community rides takes resources:
MeetUp platform**: nearly $550 per year**
Liability insurance**: ensuring we can host rides responsibly**
Event organization**: planning, route design, and coordination**
Altogether, hosting community rides costs $2,000–$3,000 each year**. Right now, those expenses are carried by our generous donors. To keep things fair, we ask all riders to contribute—either through an** annual donation or a per-event fee.
When you donate, you’re not just paying expenses—you’re fueling a movement**. You’re helping Dirty Freehub build community, create unforgettable experiences, and highlight the beauty of gravel cycling.**
We’d love for you to join the Dirty Freehub team—because together, we make these rides possible.
