Gravel Ride, Ochoco National Forest, 37 miles, 3,100 Feet of Gain
Details
Let’s Ride: Wolf Mountain Lookout!
Big views, backroad variety, and a fire lookout you can climb
We’re heading back into the Ochocos for Wolf Mountain Lookout: a 37-mile lollipop with about 3,100 feet of climbing, plenty of ponderosa forest, streams, wildflowers, rocky bits, smoother bits, and just enough surface switching to keep everyone from getting too comfortable.
The highlight is right there in the name: Wolf Mountain Lookout. Built in 1947 and still standing tall, this is not just a “pause and admire from below” situation — you can climb to the top. Which means we get a bike ride, a history field trip, a stair workout, and a sweeping view of the Black Canyon Wilderness all in one tidy little package.
The route also passes the old Rager Ranger Station, rolls through a mix of forest and open ranchland, and delivers that classic Ochoco feeling of “wait, are we still in the same ride?” Smooth pavement, gravel, tougher gravel, rocky descending, wide-open views — variety is very much part of the charm.
The Vibe
A remote, scenic Ochoco adventure with plenty to look at and a little bit of everything under the tires. Riders may naturally split into smaller groups by pace, with brief regroups when it makes sense.
This one is more rugged and remote than mellow, so come prepared to be self-sufficient, pay attention to navigation, and embrace the changing terrain. The reward: big views, quiet roads, wildflowers, forest, ranchland, and the rare chance to say, “Yes, I did climb a fire lookout in bike shoes.”
A Quick Reality Check
This is not a supported or no-drop ride. Bring enough food, water, tools, layers, and navigation to be self-sufficient for a full day in the Ochocos.
That means:
- Route downloaded ahead of time - there may not be cell service at the start
- Comfortable riding your own pace
- Flat kit, tools, fuel, and hydration
- Enough food and water for a remote day with no services
A few things to know:
- Route + GPX: Wolf Mountain Lookout
- Start Coordinates: Lat / Long: 44.234962, -119.806120
- Important Start Notes: Do not use the Meeup Pin. Use the Lat / Long in the ride guide for precise directions.
- Questions: Welcome by the night before. Service may be limited at the start.

About Dirty Freehub Community Rides
Dirty Freehub community rides are informal, volunteer-led group rides that bring people together to explore gravel roads and trails while building community. Our ride leaders are unpaid volunteers who share their time and local knowledge with fellow riders.
Dirty Freehub is a nonprofit organization, not a commercial guide or outfitter. Participation in our community rides is not the purchase of a guided service, and each rider is responsible for their own decisions, equipment, safety, and well-being throughout the ride.
To help sustain our year-round community ride program, we encourage participants who have not contributed to Dirty Freehub within the past 12 months to make a $10 administrative contribution. This contribution helps offset the costs of operating the program, including Meetup, insurance, and other administrative expenses. It is not payment for guiding services or for this specific ride, and no portion is used to compensate ride leaders.
