Pulitzer Prize, memorable history of the American west, endless musing on our complicated ever shifting culture. Many of my peers from the 70s remember today how much they liked it: "My favorite ever". (We were too young to appreciate the bittersweet Crossing to Safety chronicle of two couples over their decades-long relationship).
Good story and interesting characters including lots of quotable comments on aging, family evolution, the various opposed social and emotional forces that so obviously and often painfully shaped our Western lives and culture.
And the text is mostly straightforward. No Finnigan's Wake here. So read it for fun and come to talk it over.
