Black Butte from the Upper Trailhead (Part of the Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge)

We like big buttes and we cannot lie! And Black Butte is a beaut! This symmetrical cone-shaped butte is home to an active fire lookout tower, as well as a historic cupola that you can easily imagine must have been the coolest summer digs ever, with spectacular views of Mt Washington, The Sisters and beyond.

This moderate hike starts at the upper trailhead (which doesn't require high clearance, but is a six-mile gravel road with some washboard sections). We will climb 1,443 vertical feet over roughly four miles (two up and two down). Check out our detailed trail guide for the specifics.

Meet at the trailhead at 8:30 and begin hiking at 8:45.

Bring 1-2 liters of water, snacks, sun protection and layers appropriate for the weather. There is currently snow as you near the top, so microspikes and trekking poles may be useful (we will know more as the date draws closer).

Afterwards, you are welcome to join us at Three Creeks Brewing for lunch (opens at noon) or explore the town of Sisters on your own.

Friendly dogs are allowed; I will be bringing my two labradoodles Farley and Lucy.

This is not a fast-paced hike. Our goal is to enjoy the views (which if the weather cooperates, are awesome).
