Here’s an overview of Steelhead Falls:

“Steelhead Falls is a scenic, 20-foot waterfall and deep river pool nestled inside the Deschutes Canyon-Steelhead Falls Wilderness Study Area, roughly 8 miles west of Terrebonne and 45 minutes north of Bend.

It is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and remains a popular local destination for year-round hiking, fly-fishing, and summer cliff jumping.”

Trail Overview & Conditions

Distance: 1-mile round-trip to the main falls. (It extends up to 2 miles out-and-back if you continue downstream along the river canyon. However, we won’t do the extended trail.)

Difficulty: Rated as Moderate on AllTrails.

Terrain: The trail descends into a steep, rugged high-desert canyon. The path consists of loose sand, dirt, and gravel, which can be highly slippery during dry summer conditions or icy in winter.

Wildlife Caution: This environment is rattlesnake country. Keep a sharp eye on rocky ledges and brush from spring through autumn.”
