Ila Barlean is a living artisan who hails from the Pacific Northwest. In 2014, Ila had the opportunity to meet Master basket maker Ed Carriere, a Squamish elder and recipient of the 2023 national endowment for the arts fellowship award. For keeping alive the tradition of making the coast, Salish clam basket. Since meeting Ed, Ila’s relationship with the Cedar tree, the basket and coast Salish weaving has strengthened under Ed’s wisdom, and mentorship. Ila is honored to share her apprenticeship experience in this little book. May it encourage and honor the ancient culture of Coast Salish peoples.
Oh Little Cedar Basket has been a creation of love and inspiration. With the guidance of Ila Barlean‘s teacher, Ed Carriere she’s been able to embody his teachings of weaving a little cedar basket in order to write about a basket. Like a budding flower in spring bringing beauty, so does the sap flow up from the roots of the cedar tree. Allowing it to be ready to be gathered and prepared for creating a basket. As a child learns to weave a basket through the teaching, with an elder, they learn fundamental lessons to begin life as a young adult. Oh Little Cedar Basket captivates the reader and the listener through its poetic words and brilliant illustrations. May it bring joy to your life.
