DS Meetup 2025-01: causality and the limits of metrics

Details

To all data enthusiasts in Bergen, let’s meet up, learn, and connect!

17:00-17:20—mingling and food
17:20-17:45—"Causality, Statistics and Machine Learning" with Professor Fabio Massimo Zennaro from UiB
Abstract: This talk aims at providing an overall understanding of causality, and its implications for modelling, statistics and machine learning. We will highlight some problems of classical machine learning and statistical approaches, and then introduce the solution of casual models using the graphical language of structural causal models. We will then discuss some paradigmatic casual problems and discuss their relationship to machine learning.
17:50-18:15—"The Limits of Metrics" with Johanna Jøsang from Capgemini
Abstract: Nowadays quantitative information is increasingly used to make important decisions. Data can provide new insights and foster transparency and scalability in decision-making processes. Data is often trusted because it is considered inherently objective, even though the choice of what and how to measure is highly subjective. What questions should we therefore be asking ourselves when presented with a large dataset? And what happens when "accountability" is confused with "accountancy"?

If your company or school would be interested in sponsoring an upcoming event, please let us know. We'd like this to be a community-led event, and we rely on venue and food sponsors to make that happen. Venue sponsors will have priority for a presenter slot. Share with us the cool stuff that's happening at your organization!
