It has been 70 years since the last woman, to be hanged met her fate. Ruth Ellis was only one of many women who dwelt in the dark underbelly of 1950s Soho, a world where sexism often bordering on misogyny and class prejudice was rife. The establishment did not expect any of their grubbier secrets to be made public which must have played a part in the way Ellis was treated. Amanda Whittington’s play looks at her story very much from her point of view and of some of the other women who shared her world – only one man, a detective inspector who tries to save Ruth Ellis from herself, appears in the play.

The address for the village hall is: The Memorial Hall, Marford Road, Wheathampstead, Herts AL4 8AY
