Cholsey: It's a fair old way along The Fair Mile, 10 miles, moderate

Details

This 10-mile circular walk from Cholsey station takes us into Aston Tirrold and towards the Ridgeway before joining The Fair Mile back into Cholsey.

This walk will be led by Alex.

Please see our website for more information about the group.

Pace: medium.

Walk details

We start our walk today from Cholsey station heading under the railway and on towards Aston Tirrold, a village and civil parish at the foot of the Berkshire Downs. It was part of Berkshire until the 1974 boundary changes transferred it to Oxfordshire.

We continue our route heading south west in the direction of the Ridgeway to Aston Upthorpe Downs. Once reaching the gallops and taking in the spectacular views we start our journey back into Cholsey along the Fair Mile; Fair Mile Hospital was a lunatic asylum built in 1870 in the village of Cholsey.

Please consider wearing trousers rather than shorts on this walk. During the summer months we see a lot of pathways lined with stinging nettles.
