This beautiful 7.5-mile circular walk begins at Pangbourne Station, setting out through the charming riverside village before heading into open countryside. The route follows quiet lanes and field paths towards Bozedown Farm, where you may spot the friendly Bozedown alpacas grazing on the hillside — a delightful sight that always raises a smile.

From here, the path climbs steadily up the steep Straw Hill, one of the walk’s more challenging sections, but the reward is well worth it: far-reaching views across the Thames Valley and the rolling Chiltern Hills, especially stunning when framed by the golden and russet tones of autumn. The walk continues along a tranquil stretch of the Chiltern Way, weaving between hedgerows, beech woods and quiet country lanes.

We will stop along the way to have lunch before reaching Whitchurch Hill, the perfect mid-walk stop awaits at The Sun Inn in Hill Bottom — a welcoming country pub offering a well-earned drink.

Refreshed, the route begins its gentle descent through woodland paths and open fields towards Whitchurch-on-Thames, where the first glimpses of the river reappear through the trees.

A picturesque crossing over the River Thames leads back into Pangbourne, completing a wonderfully varied walk of hills, heaths, woods and water. In autumn, the countryside comes alive with colour, every step echoing with the rustle of fallen leaves — a perfect celebration of the season’s beauty.
