Sunday Stroll: Harwell, 5 miles, Leisurely
Details
This 5-mile circular walk explores the landscapes around Harwell Campus and East Hendred Down, combining cutting-edge science with classic Oxfordshire countryside.
We begin at Harwell Campus, one of the UK’s leading science and innovation centres, home to world-renowned facilities such as the Science and Technology Facilities Council and major research infrastructure including the Diamond Light Source. As we leave the campus behind, we head west towards Ardington, passing near East Hendred and gradually exchanging laboratories and research buildings for open fields and wide views.
Turning towards the ancient trackway of the The Ridgeway, we enjoy the views before avoiding the steep climb and instead following the gentler contours of East Hendred Down.
We then loop back towards Harwell Campus, skirting its boundary and reflecting on the contrast between this peaceful rural landscape and the world-class scientific work taking place just beyond the hedgerows, before returning to our starting point.
