Folly Good Walking: The Theale & Englefield Ramble, 7 miles, leisurely

Get ready for a 7-mile ramble packed with estates, woodland, deer, a historic folly and even a couple of M4 crossings!

We’ll set off from Theale Station and soon make our way into the beautiful Englefield Estate, owned by the Benyon family. Keep your eyes peeled as we wander through the estate — we might even be lucky enough to spot some of the fallow deer that call it home.

From Englefield, we’ll head towards Sulham, crossing the noisy M4 via the rather impressive spiral footpath — because apparently one crossing of the motorway isn't enough for this walk!

We’ll then head into Foxgrove Woods, enjoying some peaceful woodland walking before making our way to the historic Wilders Folly. A perfect spot to pause, explore and admire this intriguing piece of local history. Wilder's Folly is 257 years old. It was built in 1769 by the Reverend Henry Wilder on Nunhide Hill while courting Joan Thoyts.

After our folly-filled adventure, we’ll meander our way back towards Theale, passing IKEA before crossing the M4 once again and eventually returning to Theale Station, where our 9-mile adventure began.

Please bring a packed lunch, as we’ll be stopping somewhere along the route for a picnic lunch. So pack your sandwiches, bring your walking boots and come prepared for plenty of miles, smiles and a little bit of folly!

Parking is available at the train station, charges apply (APCOA). You may find some free parking in some of the local side roads near the station.
