The novel is a multi-generational family saga that traces the American experience through three generations of a Chinese-American family. It explores questions of identity, belonging, and the legacy of family history across time.
The New York Times called it “a deft exploration of family secrets, social constructs, and ambition.” The book became an immediate bestseller upon its US-release in 2024; the German translation followed in 2025.
