Dear Book Enthusiasts,

For our March gathering, we’ll be reading Raised from the Ground by the Nobel Prize–winning author Jose Saramago.

First published in 1980, this powerful novel traces several generations of landless peasants in rural Portugal, giving voice to lives shaped by poverty, repression, endurance, and quiet resistance. With his distinctive narrative style and moral clarity, Saramago explores labor, injustice, solidarity, and dignity, transforming collective struggle into unforgettable literature.
