Welcome to our first session! We'll read and discuss Martin Heidegger's essay "The Question Concerning Technology" (1954), one of the founding texts of the philosophy of technology.

THE READING
About 35 pages. The standard English translation is by William Lovitt, in "The Question Concerning Technology and Other Essays" (Harper & Row). Haven't finished it? Come anyway, we'll start with a short recap.

AGENDA (90 minutes)
19:00 – Welcome, introductions and a short recap of the essay
19:15 – Small breakout groups: main claim, key concepts, does it hold up, is it relevant today?
20:00 – Back together to share the best points
20:30 – End

QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT

  1. What does Heidegger mean by "enframing" (Gestell), and why does he say the essence of technology is nothing technological?
  2. What is "standing reserve"? Can you think of modern examples?
  3. Is Heidegger's view of technology still relevant in the age of AI?
