About us
Welcome to the Berlin Stoics!
We meet, sometimes virtually and sometimes in person, to learn more about Stoicism and other philosophies and discuss both their theoretical framework and their practical applications, especially in our daily lives.
What is Stoicism? Stoicism can be characterized – and this is by no means the only version of a summary definition – as a non-doctrinal philosophy which encourages one to recognize and critique their desires and judgments, act in accordance with their personal values, and treat others fairly for the sake of improving their community and society at large. We must do so first by accepting the things outside of our control as they are, while changing for the better those things within our sphere of influence, in order to think more rationally, develop virtuous character, and cultivate a eudaimonic and meaningful life. The Stoics thought this virtuous character, the chief motivator behind practicing the philosophy, could be embodied by thinking and acting prudently, justly, temperately, and courageously. Stoicism has been compared with the likes of Buddhism and Daoism, a western version of a contemplative and humble philosophy without temples or followings.
Welcome again, make sure to subscribe for notifications and to check out our upcoming events, and we while we remain indifferent, it'd be eudaimonic to see you soon.
About our group
Meeting Format: We'll alternate somewhat between virtual and in-person events. These include text or reading circles, simple discussions, or hikes.
Looking for event organizers: We're always looking for others interested in organizing events or simple meetups for the group. Send the organizer a message if you're interested. It doesn't have to be full-time or regular, it could be just one-time.
Small entry fees for some events: generally our events are free to attend, but some events might require a small fee. To maintain a meetup.com group requires a fee and we'd kindly appreciate a bit of help every so often.
Berlin Stoics is a part of The Stoic Fellowship, an international non-profit organization which has built a hub of materials, resources, and a database of Stoic members who congregate in cities around the world as part of local chapters of Stoic meetups known as Stoa.

Stoic exercises: Life Hacks or practicing Philosophy?
Mars Küche & Bar, Gerichtstraße 35, Seiteneingang, 13347 Berlin, Berlin, DEDear friends of Stoicism,
I want to invite you to another event, where we can discuss our favorite philosophy.
Could it be that it's required to buy into the whole philosophy in order for the exercises to show any results? Do we have to understand the theory of Stoicism before we can expect to practice it correctly?
Next Thursday we want to share our favorite Stoic exercises (if we have any), and discuss, if this is enough to be a proper Stoic. This might be the last time we announce an event on this platform. But that doesn't mean, we're stop organizing events. In case you missed it, here the announcements from our main organizer of the last years, Daniya:
"Dear all, You may be wondering why our lovely meetup group has been so quiet lately. There are two reasons for this. First, the current co-organizer Daniya was organizing meetups for a small, closed group for about 1.5 years, before other responsibilities started to demand more of her time. As for the other co-organizers Cay-Eric, Rachel and Patrick, they are also currently committed to other matters. We are very much looking forward to hosting future events once everyone has more time to dedicate to learning about Stoicism together. If you would like to become a co-organizer and host some events, please don’t hesitate to contact us — this would be very welcome!
We have decided to move to a free platform for the time being. Huge thanks to Steve for starting this group during Covid, and thank you for joining and being part of it. To keep the group alive, we are moving to Facebook for now. Future events will be hosted through Facebook or announced via other platforms.- Please find the link to the new Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/897182939873217
- Subscribe to our newsletter so we can stay in touch with you: https://stoa-berlin.mailchimpsites.com
Hope to see you in the other group and at the future events!"
I'm looking forward to another interesting evening at our "regular" meeting location "Mars".
See you there! :-)
