Recap of part 5, act 4. After a few more hours of travel the party makes it to the fish camps, (1PM) just outside of Whitethrone where Ringeirr Malenkov lives, and the PC’s guide to sneaking into the locked down city of Whitethrone. While they walked past the huts and houses, the camp seemed abandoned, the smell of fish filled the air. As the party got close to the docks, they came across some self-declared fish-camp guards, picking on a lone fisherman, they were demanding a tax payment, while the fisherman was pleading, he did not have it. Gutrender wasted no time, and went after the guards, catching them by surprise. The guards had reach weapons, and tripped Gutrender once. Arcelia hit them with arrows, while Juno used daze on them, Zaur went in to attack in his dinosaur form. The guards did not last long, and the fisherman was grateful, they also learned from him that Ringeirr was taken by some guards to their jail/house.
The party approached to scope out the house, they observed the building was in very bad shape, and it would be possible to crash right through a wall, so that’s what they did. Gutrender went through one of the doors, running into the guards in the living room. Zaur went through a wall that led into a bedroom, where Ringeirr was tied up. The party made quick work of the two guards, and rescued Ringeirr.
They all went back to Ringeirr’s home for the rest of the afternoon and night. They party asked some questions of Ringeirr and learned that the city was under martial law, and that Elvanna a white witch replaced the Iron guard with her loyal Winter guard. Ringeirr also mentions he joined a resistance group called the Heralds of Summers return, and that they have safe houses and underground hideouts. He tells the PC’s it would be impossible to go through the main gates, but there is a side entrance that he knows the Winter Wolf guard Greta there takes bribes. He mentions they will have to hide their weapons to enter the city, except for Zaur who is wearing the Rimepelt that disguises the wearer as a winter wolf, they can carry any weapon, or armor in their human form. Once inside the side gate, in an area called the Howlings, they would need to go to a forger named Morton to get good enough credentials to pass in the main city areas. Ringeirr then asks for the PC’s help in delivering a cart of fish to feed the poor, and also use it as a way into the Howlings. Once inside the main city area, he will take the party to meet Solveig Ayrdahl the leader of the Heralds of summers return. The party agrees to the plan and will set out in the morning, Nadya tells the party this is as far as she goes, and she will return to her boys in the morning, the evening is filled with laughter and tears as they say goodbye to each other.
As claimed by Ringeirr the party is able to bribe their way past Greta the winter wolf guard, but she takes a shine to Zaur transformed into the human form of a winter wolf, and asks Zaur on a date for that evening, Zaur lets her down easy with some good diplomacy/handle animal, and no animosity is made between the two.
On their way to deliver some fish, the party is attacked by some snow goblins they passed hiding behind some carts. One was an alchemist that lobed a firebomb at the party while the other goblins shot arrows. Zaur cast a fascinating fog over the goblins, causing some of them to stare into space, and blocking the vision of many of them (20% miss chance in outer edge of fog, complete cover inside fog). Gutrender and wolf got around the carts to attack, Juno went in for some melee attacks, as Arcelia returned fire with her bow, and eventually they took out the Back Ally Boys.
Soon after a Mirror Man came walking down the path the party was on, and Ringeirr tells the party to hide. Jumping in the snow and hiding behind trees, or using the wand of spider climb, the party hides from the special guard spy for the queen. After the guard passes, the party is able to deliver the fish and continue to the forgers home for city credentials. (11:30am). Level up to 6.
1, What have you been doing lately? I was contacted by the underground resistance group called the Heralds of Summer’s Return. These resistance fighters in Whitethrone are members of a clandestine cult of Milani who maintain a secret shrine to the goddess in the city. I am Now an agent of the Heralds, I smuggle the desperate out of the city and brings in much needed supplies to the resistance
2, How difficult is it to get into the city? It has been very difficult recently to get in and out of the city. He says that Elvanna has removed the Iron Guard from power and instituted a new military force in its place, the Winter Guard, loyal to her alone. Elvanna has also declared martial law in Whitethrone, making it extremely dangerous to go through the city’s primary gates. Traffic still passes through the city gates, but it has slowed to a crawl, with large contingents of the Winter Guard performing thorough searches of anyone entering or leaving Whitethrone.
3, What other dangers are there in the city? Ringeirr explains—citizens are routinely checked even within the city. He says the PCs will need papers authorizing their movement throughout Whitethrone, not just through its gates, but Ringeirr thinks they might be able to exploit a loophole. He describes a privileged group of Jadwiga called stilyagi, young nobles known for their outlandish behavior and styles of dress. Like-minded stilyagi form gangs that adopt the cultural and stylistic trappings of other lands and peoples—even pretending to be adventurers from other nations. With their wealth and indolent lifestyle, stilyagi are also notorious for the recruitment of foreigners (even those of other races) to Whitethrone to act as companions, teachers, and advisors—at least until they grow tired of them. Ringeirr suggests that the PCs could take the roles of stilyagi and their foreign guests to move about the city
He says he knows a guy, an eccentric forger in Whitethrone who not only can prepare the correct documents but also knows the secret household symbols of many of the city’s Jadwiga clans and can reproduce them with arcane marks for added authenticity. The forger, a man named Mortin, lives on the borders of the district known as the Howlings, which is predominantly controlled by winter wolves, but it is the one district he feels he might be able to get the PCs through and into the city. Thanks to an ancient pact with Baba Yaga, winter wolves can assume human form in the Howlings. But even to get in here you can’t wear heavy armor, or shields, or openly display anything bigger than a dagger, without the proper documents.
4, what other gates are there besides the main gates?
The “Howlings Gate” is not a gate at all but rather a hole in the city wall that gives the wolves unrestricted access to their district. The wolves are responsible for security of the district, and he knows they’re often lax about it and susceptible to bribery. With my merchants sales license and a gold piece I can get all of you into the Howlings, and to my forger for papers to get into the main city. Papers identifying you as stilyagi or part of a stilyagi entourage are preferable, as they’ll grant more privileges with fewer questions.
I could also use your assistance in a side mission and maybe help you out at the same time. I need to bring food for desperate humans who are going hungry, and I’d like your help in making the delivery, and we can wrap your heavy gear in oiled cloth and bury it under the fish we will be delivering.
If the PCs balk at this idea, Ringeirr says it is only essential until they clear the gate. Once they’re actually in the Howlings, they can reclaim their gear, but they’ll need to either avoid or deal with any encounters until they deliver Ringeirr’s load of fish and get to Mortin’s home to obtain their papers.
5, will you introduce us to your contact with the Heralds of Summer’s return? Yes, once safely inside the city, with the possession of their forged papers and the food delivery made, I will take them to meet my contact with the Heralds of Summer’s Return, a woman named Solveig Ayrdahl. Solveig is the leader of the cult of Milani in Whitethrone, and she can give shelter in the city and more information on the current conditions there.
