“A hot dog at the ballpark is better than a steak at the Ritz.” -- Humphrey Bogart
Seriously, Deluxe Diners, I ask you, is there anything greater on a fine spring day than eating a GREAT hot dog and a soda in the sun? Those of you who are originally from the upper Midwest and Northeast probably grew up with a healthy appreciation for great frankfurters on a bun, and thanks to the wonderful people at Let's Be Frank we have gourmet hot dogs on the Westside!
Let's Be Frank originated in the foodie nirvana of San Francisco, and serves 100% Grass Fed gourmet hot dogs and brats, grilled and served up on fine bakery rolls, with lovely toppings--even carmelized onions!Their gourmet trucks are the creation of a former chef at SF's famed Chez Panise, and they serve up a serious dog! Well, as serious as a hot dog can be. I can hardly wait to eat there with you guys!
Let's Be Frank is one of Jonathan Gold's 99 Essential LA Restaurants, and has gotten great reviews from The LA Times, Bon Appetit, Gourmet, Zagat and on and on.
From the LA Weekly review:
The proprietor is Sue Moore, a former Chez Panisse forager, and her dogs are made with organic, grass-fed, sustainably raised beef; her bratwurst from organic Berkshire pork; her Italian sausage, should you be lucky enough to run across it, from rare-breed Heritage pigs. None of this would matter if the hot dogs weren’t great, but they are: taut, delicious natural-skin beauties that snap like rim shots when you bite into them; mildly seasoned, tucked into griddled buns and served, if you wish, with grilled onions, organic sauerkraut and an occasional mystery condiment Moore hides under the counter like the secret stash at a comic book store. Helms Ave., between Venice and Washington boulevards, Culver City. Wed.-Fri., 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Sat.-Sun., 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. No alcohol. Lot parking. AE, MC, V.
We'll meet in front of the truck at their permanent Helms Bakery location at 1:30 and get into line to order at 1:40pm. Seating is on benches in a little area near the truck and is first come, first served. I’ve been told it’s not too crowded in the area at the time we’re meeting, but be aware that we may be eating these dogs the traditional city way--on our feet. As always, this Meetup is members only and a photo is required to RSVP.
Hope to see you there,
Christina
