Re: [betaNYC] [RFCI] Request for community input on proposed BetaNYC Code of Conduct & anti harassment policy

Lothar,

Per the first email, the "safe space" concept seems to have been part of the ideals of the BetaNYC community from the beginning. It may have been borne out of the members' experiences or subjects of discussion as the realization of varied cultural identities, needs and values of its members dawned on them.

And, since the community is expanding, it is just fitting to codify these community principles and values in a documented form for common accessibility and reference. I suppose that is a (large) part of the intentions behind this initiative.

But then again, this is just my understanding. Members who have been involved in the community longer tor deeper than I have may have better insights into it. :)

To Independence and Diversity,
Muhammad

Just curious...what triggered this document to be produced?

Thank you everyone!!!

In the last 24 hours, you have made one of the most meaningful documents I've ever had the pleasure of collaborating. Our Code of Conduct is streamlined into 10 points and our anti-harassment policy is the most inclusive policy I've ever seen. Still, there is work to be done. < http://bit.ly/betanyc-coc >

Over the 4th of July weekend, I would love for you to think about the values that make you connect with your friends, families, and neighbors and try to bring those insights into this document.

Since our founding, BetaNYC has adopted “safe and open” spaces to bring individuals together to work on issues related to government. We constantly reminded ourselves to respect each other’s ideas and work on solving larger problems. Though the years, we have built a safe and respected space for government to interact openly with New York City’s technology, design, and advocacy community.

Last year, BetaNYC and Code for America Brigade openly discussed how to take “safe spaces” and applying them to our events and community.

In the lead up to a larger BetaNYC membership platform launch, the organizers of BetaNYC are proposing a Code of Conduct and Anti-Harassment Policy.

We want your input. Feel free to hop into this Google doc and use Google’s built in commenting, or give private feedback at < [address removed] >.
