Introduction from Goodreads:

What do Pixar, Google and the San Antonio Spurs basketball team have in common?

The answer is that they all owe their extraordinary success to their team-building skills. In The Culture Code, Daniel Coyle goes inside some of the most effective organisations in the world and reveals their secrets. He not only explains what makes such groups tick, but also identifies the key factors that can generate team cohesion in any walk of life. He examines the verbal and physical cues that bring people together. He determines specific strategies that encourage collaboration and build trust. And he offers cautionary tales of toxic cultures and advises how to reform them, above all demonstrating the extraordinary achievements that result when we know how to cooperate effectively.

Here are some details about the book discussion event:

  • We will meet at Le Pain Quotidien (2900 Clarendon Blvd, Arlington, VA 22201).
  • Please RSVP to attend. If you sign up but cannot attend the event, please change your RSVP status 6 hours before the event or leave a comment so that members in the waitlist can attend.
  • To have a great experience at the discussion, participants are encouraged to read through the book before the meeting, and think about the guided questions posted below. However, we understand that we are all very busy. There is no pressure for participants to finish the book before the discussion.

This book discussion event will last about 90 min. Here is the overall structure:

  1. Self-introduction, what’s your overall thought about this book? (20 min)
  2. Guided questions for discussions (60 min):

Build Safety:
1. The author discusses the importance of creating a safe environment within a group. How can a leader balance the need for safety with the need for accountability and high performance?
2. The book emphasizes the impact of belonging cues and shared experiences. How might these concepts be used to build a sense of unity and shared identity in multicultural societies where diverse backgrounds and perspectives coexist?

Share Vulnerability:
3. Do you agree that sharing personal vulnerabilities can lead to stronger group bonds? How might cultural or societal factors affect the willingness to be vulnerable within a group?
4. Pixar's "Braintrust" and the Marine Corps' approach highlight the role of candid feedback and structured communication. How can groups strike a balance between providing honest feedback and maintaining a positive atmosphere?

Establish Purpose:
5. The idea of a shared purpose is central to the book. Can you think of examples where a lack of a clear purpose hindered a group's effectiveness? How can groups identify and articulate their shared purpose more effectively?
6. The book highlights the significance of clear and concise language in conveying purpose. How can groups ensure that their purpose remains relevant and motivating over time, especially in the face of challenges?

Overall:
7. In the context of the "The Culture Code," how do you think the principles discussed apply to larger societal or organizational contexts, such as schools, communities, or even entire nations? Can you identify any real-world examples that align with or challenge the book's ideas?
------------------------------------

To provide an enjoyable experience for fellow participants, here are three ground rules during book discussion events:

  1. Step up and step back. (If you feel that you’ve been talking too much, step back to listen more. If you feel that you’ve been relatively quiet, step up to share your perspective or ask a question)
  2. Listen to understand, not to respond.
  3. Be open-minded and value differences.

note:

  • This book club will always be free and will never accept fundraising, sponsorships, or advertising. The only request is that, because we will usually meet at a Clarendon local coffee shop, it will be great if participants can order some drinks or meal items during events.
