What we’re about
Write polished memoir (or fiction, that’s OK) for enthusiasts at all skill and experience levels, critique each other's work, discuss which literary magazines, agents, and contests are open for submissions, and learn about the book publishing industry.
YOU'VE POURED BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS INTO YOUR CREATION, NOW SHARE IT WITH YOUR PEERS! Read aloud whatever you like: memoir chapters, short stories, essays, poetry, journal entries or excerpts from your novel. Upload your work for a pre-read or read it live.
In addition to open mic, the weekly Saturday morning 11:00am EST meetings will be heavy on guest speakers and industry pros. Attend whenever as you can (hopefully attend often). All meetings are online so all-comers, even those from outside the DC metro area, are welcome!
Group organizer Mel Christie hosts (as of Aug 2025) and Pete Warner works the phones, does the research, and recruits seasoned pros (particularly "how to write memoir" writers) to share their tips and field questions from members - at least one guest per month.
The revamped club is a democracy and is flexible regarding meeting formats, guest requests, suggestions for fresh name authors and other speakers. Even if you have never put pen to paper, started your memoir, or are still trying to find your genre, you can learn how the pros do it and the process they went through here!
Got questions? Contact Mel Christie through Meetup messaging, or bring them up on our next session!

•OnlineAUTHOR/COACH NINA AMIR: "INSPIRATION TO CREATION," BUSINESS SMARTS FOR SUCCESS.
OnlineHow to be a Successful Author – from Idea to Published to Success
Hybrid Author Nina Amir will help you understand what it takes to become a successful published author. You need more than an idea or writing skill. You also need business and marketing knowledge and the identity, mindset, and habits to achieve your goals.
Nina will discuss topics related to her three traditionally published books, The Author Training Manual, Creative Visualization for Writers, and How to Blog a Book.
First, Nina will cover the need for a business plan—and business approach—to your book and career. Improve your odds of becoming a successful author by producing a business plan for your book before you write a word. You also develop a career plan to help you reach your goal: successful authorship.
Learn how to determine if your book is not only a great creative idea but also marketable product—a viable business venture. Go through the Author Training Process, the foundation for creating books that sell—to publishers and to readers! This nine-step evaluation tool helps you determine if your book is ready to go to market—to be shopped to agents, publishers or readers—and if you are ready to become an author. This session is appropriate for fiction writers and for nonfiction writers and for writers planning to self-publish or traditionally publish.
During this part of the presentation, you’ll:
- Learn how to discover if your book idea is marketable.
- Find out how to decide if you are cut out to write and market a successful book—if you are an attractive publishing partner or savvy indie publisher.
- Discover the nine steps in the “proposal process.”
- Find out why you shouldn’t write your book as soon as you get the idea.
- Learn how to be the business partner a publisher seeks.
Writing a book can be an arduous task. Getting that book published can seem even more daunting. Producing a successful book—one that sells more than the average 250 print copies or 560 digital copies per year—may seem down-right overwhelming and leave even the most inspired writer feeling uninspired by the time they get even close to completing their book project.
It’s no wonder that of the 81 percent of Americans who say they want to write a book, only two percent ever accomplish this feat. And even less do so successfully.
It is possible to move yourself from inspiration to creation—completion—of your book. Learn how to stay inspired from the moment the light bulb goes off all the way through your book release—and beyond. Find out how to put your passion and purpose to use, develop an “Author Attitude” and embrace the many tasks that get you to your goal of successful authorship without feeling burned out, hating the process, doubting yourself and your idea, or, worse yet, giving up.
During this session, you’ll:
- Discover the four characteristics all successful authors need to possess.
- Explore tips and tools to keep you positive, excited and energized by your book project.
- Uncover the one thing that holds you back—and how to overcome it.
- Uncover the one thing that will keep you writing and moving toward your goal.
Additionally, Nina will cover blogging as a means to promote yourself and your books long term, build an audience for your work, and land a book deal. Agents and acquisition editors troll the Internet looking for successful blogs and bloggers. Why? They want to find ideas that are as close to a "sure thing" as possible. A blog with an established readership and a blogger with a built-in platform represents a successfully test marketed book idea.
Learn:
- Why all aspiring authors should blog
- What to blog about
- Why agents and acquisition editors love bloggers
- Why blogging remains the best long-term marketing strategy
