This 11-piece Afrofunk big band explores the common groove between the funkiest, West African beats and American popular music, all while serving up lyrics in seven languages. At the core of Chopteeth’s sound is Afrobeat—a big-band funk, invented by Fela Kuti in 1970s Nigeria, that’s a mix of modern jazz, Yoruba tribal music, and James Brown-inspired rhythms. The 14-time Wammie-winning group features original compositions with updates of African dance classics, remaining true to the spirit of the music and its message.
