What we’re about
Welcome to the Better Media Meetup Group.
Think media moguls have too much influence in our society?
Dream of community-led media and co-ops in every neighbourhood?
Work as an independent journalist, filmmaker, or photographer?
Want to democratise and mutualise the BBC?
Unsure what this is all about, but curious to learn more?
You’re in the right place.
We’re a community for people who care about creating and building a more independent, accountable and democratic media landscape. Whether you're a seasoned media activist or just starting to explore these issues, this group is a space to connect, learn, and take action.
Join us in:
- A growing movement of independent news outlets and public interest journalists, founded on democratic and grassroots support
- New initiatives for genuine public accountability, promoting trustworthy journalism and challenging harmful and unethical practices
- A strong, active coalition of campaign groups, civil society organisations and activist networks working together to develop new models and solutions for a better media.

A Note from the New Admins
Hello everyone! We're here from the Independent Media Association and News Club UK, and we're stepping in to help revitalise this group, as it is super exciting to see so many people passionate about changing the media! We're plugged into loads of great events that media activists are organising, and we’ll be posting about them here.
Got an event to share?
Want to help run the group or organise meetups?
We’d love to hear from you!
A Little Background
This group was set up by Josef Davies-Coates while Campaign Coordinator for the Media Reform Coalition. It was later revived when he became National Organiser for the Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom (CPBF). Now, it's in the hands of the Better Media team and News Club admins, and we’re just getting started!

A News Club is a lot like a book club… but for the news.
Welcome to the first edition of News Club Live, hosted by News Clubs UK & Media Revolution. Here’s what to expect:
- 3 news topics or stories from this month
- 5 minute introductions per topic
- 20 minute group discussions for each
News Clubs are our way of bringing people together. Not just to talk about the news, but to also ask: what can we do about it?
Action is at the heart of what we do. The News Clubs podcast explores ideas, tools and provocations for those who want to create change.
We ask: What would it mean to imagine and organise for a media system that is democratic, community-led, and accountable to us?
