WATER, WINE, AND WITTGENSTEIN

The next meeting of the Beverly Literati and Culture Meet-Up Group will be held at our house: 18 Hathaway Avenue in Beverly, Massachusetts. There are three parts to this meeting.

WATER. We have a beautiful, built-in, heated pool, so bring a swimsuit and a towel if you want to take a dip.

WINE. We will taster some delectable summer wines. They will be provided — as will the burgers and hot dogs. Please bring a dish (an appetizer, a salad, a dessert) to share if you wish. Also, BYOB if you want something other than wine to drink.

WITTGENSTEIN. The early 20th century Austrian-British philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein was interested in how human beings communicate ideas to one another. Words enable us to make pictures of facts. But communication often goes awry, because other people have the wrong picture of what we mean. Also, sometimes we read more into what others say. In an age of social media, Wittgenstein’s thought is quite pertinent. Think of the problems that come with a misread text or Facebook post. I have an article on Wittgenstein that I happy to send to all of you (via e-mail) beforehand.

Questions? Please call (913) 909-6591. See you then!
