What we’re about
Tired of book clubs choosing the same books over and over again? Milan Kundera’s sexist "The Unbearable Lightness of Being", Matt Haig's predictable "The Midnight Library" or Paulo Coelho's overrated "The Alchemist"?
We were too and that's why we decided to create the Beyond Borders Readers Club!
- Why Beyond Borders?
Our intention is to motivate ourselves and the group to read books by authors and about topics that are beyond what we’re used to. We want to cross the borders of reading books mainly written in English, avoiding where possible, books from best seller lists, as well as stepping away from reading mainly male authors and other authors who are already over-represented in the publishing industry. - Why Readers Club?
We aim to set the focus on the readers as well as the books. Because would books even exist without there being someone to read them? - Our Book Picks
Each month a book will be chosen using the following guidelines where possible:
- Preferably female and non cis-gender authors
- Authors and/or stories that represent minority groups
- The original language of the book is not English
- The book is easily available in Barcelona.
We encourage readers to make future book suggestions, so if you have some in mind that fit in with the criteria mentioned above, bring them along to one of our next meetings!
***All discussions will be held in English and in-person in Barcelona.***
Before attending, please ensure you are familiar with our Community Guidelines as outlined below:
- Aim to arrive at the scheduled time
- Allow others to share without interrupting
- Help foster a group dynamic by avoiding dispersing into smaller groups
- Maintain a device-free environment where possible
- Come with an open mind and curiosity!

BOOK: Wound
AUTHOR: Oksana Vasyakina
ORIGINAL LANGUAGE: Russian
TRANSLATOR: Elina Alter
PAGES: 240
PUBLISHED: 2021SUMMARY: For fans of Maggie Nelson and Eileen Myles, the lyrical and deeply moving story of a young queer woman’s journey across Russia to inter her mother’s ashes and to understand her sexuality, femininity, and grief.
From one of Russia’s most exciting new voices, Wound follows a young lesbian poet on a journey from Moscow to her hometown in Siberia, where she has promised to bury her mother’s ashes. Woven throughout this fascinating travel narrative are harrowing and at times sublime memories of her childhood and her sexual and artistic awakening. As she carefully documents her grief and interrogates her past, the narrator of Oksana Vasyakina’s autobiographical novel meditates on queerness, death, and love and finds new words for understanding her relationship with her mother, her country, her sexuality, and her identity as an artist.
A sensual, whip-smart account of the complicated dynamics of queer life in present-day Siberia and Moscow, Wound is also in conversation with feminist thinkers and artists, including Susan Sontag, Louise Bourgeois, and Monique Wittig, locating Vasyakina’s work in a rich and exciting international literary tradition.
