Scottish Bothy trip
Details
This is a trip to a remote part of Scotland with the key feature of staying in a bothy. It will be a place we've never been to before, so 'Where?' is open to discussion.
A bothy is a stone tent. It will have a floor, walls, ceiling and, if we're lucky, a fireplace to have a fire and keep warm.
The plan is this:
- Thursday: drive to Scotland...it's a long way. Stay in a hostel
- Friday: drive closer and then walk into the bothy, explore
- Saturday: Explore, bag munroes
- Sunday: Explore, bag munroes
- Monday: Find our way back via interesting features and have a hot shower in a hostel
- Tuesday: Hearty breakfast and drive back
You will need:
- Suitable footwear and clothing and spare clothing
- Sleeping bag, sleeping mat and pillow
- Cooking equipment and eating utensils
- Food for 4 days (dehydrated food is recommended!)
- A rucsac big enough to carry all this (although I have one someone could borrow for a small fee)
You will need to contribute to carrying group kit
- Fuel for the bothy stove (last year was 2.5kg per person...or be cold!)
- Water purification system (2 for the group)
- Comprehensive first aid kit and emergency shelter
- Tea, coffee, cleaning stuff
- Possibly spare tent in case the bothy is crowded
My luxury item is a litre of fresh milk, others had hip flasks with different contents :-)
Costs will be worked out once there are enough people committed to the trip. These will include:
- Accommodation at the beginning and end (circa £40-50)
- A contribution to the Mountain Bothies Association (£20pp)
- A contribution to Garmin InReach satellite subscription (set up for the trip) to provide regular check in and emergency SOS (£7pp).
- Fuel for the bothy fire (circa £8pp)
- Maps for the area
