Let's go and....stay in a Scottish Bothy!

Details

We are continuing the annual tradition of escaping life, the universe and everything (or at the least work, the news and social media!) by going and spending a few days in remote Scottish wilderness.

As it's a bit later this year we're going to a bothy that's rated 5* and is actually only about an hours or so from the road with an easy route in. So, not too far to carry heavy bags.

This will be an ideal introduction to anyone who has not been to a bothy before and they are very much welcomed.

We'll be staying Gleann Dubh-Lighe which is east of Glenfinnan. For Harry Potter fans we could go and see the viaduct, but I doubt if the steam train will be running.

Gleann Dubh-Lighe has fireplaces so can be warmed, but that will depend upon how much fire fuel we carry in!

The plan is this:

  • Thursday: drive to Scotland...it's a long way. Stay in Corran Bunkhouse (Onich)
  • Friday: drive closer and then walk into the bothy, explore
  • Saturday: Explore, bag munroes/Corbetts
  • Sunday: Explore, bag munroes/Corbetts
  • Monday: Return in time to buy food (and drink) for dinner, return to the Corran Bunkhouse, hot shower and a relaxing evening
  • Tuesday: Hearty breakfast and drive back

You will need:

  • Suitable footwear and clothing and spare clothing
  • Sleeping bag, sleeping mat and pillow
  • Cooking equipment and eating utensils
  • Food for 4 days (dehydrated food is recommended!)
  • A rucsac big enough to carry all this (although I have one someone could borrow)

You will need to contribute to carrying group kit

  • Fuel for the bothy stove (2.5kg per person...or be cold!)
  • Water purification system (2 for the group)
  • One cooker between 2 people

I will have a comprehensive first aid kit and a satellite communication system with the ability to get updated weather forecasts plus SOS function.

The cost will be approximately £130 plus RSVP fee to cover:

  • Hostel accommodation at the beginning and end
  • A contribution to the Mountain Bothies Association )
  • A contribution to Garmin InReach satellite subscription (set up for the trip) to provide regular check in and emergency SOS
  • Fuel for the bothy fire
  • Maps for the area

Any questions please ask
