Tracking commercial aircraft in real-time using a Raspberry PI, Kafka and Vertica (https://www.vertica.com/).
Mark will provide a review of the Flight Tracking project which has been developing since January 2017, where ADS-B has been used to track the position, speed and other metrics of aircraft. A Raspberry Pi performs the data capture and decoding, an ETL application, Apache Kafka, integration between Kafka and Vertica, simple data visualisation using geospatial coordinates and a Google Maps API, time series gap filling and interpolation, outlier detection and sessionization to name but a few of the topics covered!
This presentation will discuss some of the latest developments in this project including simplifying the deployment for anyone who wants to take part.

A RAFT based application store on ArangoDB’s Agency
The need for replicated logs and state machines, resilient to local failures and network partitions, has led to the development of the Paxos and more recently of the RAFT consensus protocols. While many very good implementations of RAFT have been developed by the community over the last years, we demonstrate that significant added value can be derived from immersing an application framework into the consensus realm.

The Threads Intelligent Message Hub
Threads (http://www.threads.cloud/) is a cloud-based service that transparently ingests any form of digital message - including emails and VoIP telephone calls. It uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Automatic Speech Recognition to convert scanned document (attachments) and acoustic phone calls into text so they may be searched and transcribed. As such, it has many applications for companies. These include collaborative working, shared inbox, eDiscovery, project collation. Threads provides information to authorised user in an extremely simple, intuitive interface. It has the unique ability to extract contextual information from text messages to improve the performance of ASR and OCR. This presentation gives the background to Threads, its design philosophy and a live demonstration.
