Why Data-as-a-Service Is the Next-Generation Data Platform

Dremio recently came out of stealth defining an exciting new category in analytics: Data-as-a-Service. Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) provides critical capabilities for a wide range of data sources and analytical workloads through a unified data model and faster end to end speed than ever before. The open source project addresses key needs in terms of simplifying access, accelerating analytical processing, securing and masking data, curating datasets, and providing a unified catalog of data across all sources.

Dremio’s founders also co-created the popular open source project, Apache Arrow, which has quickly become the standard for high-performance in-memory processing. Arrow has integrations into major projects such as Spark, Pandas, and Parquet with each of these projects adopting Arrow as the go-to representation for data processing and interchange to improve how effectively systems can share and process data.

In this talk, we’ll explore the requirements we considered when developing Apache Arrow for a wide range of workloads, including Data-as-a-Service. We’ll dive into the concepts of Dremio’s implementation, a platform already used by thousands of organizations today. Finally, we’ll take a look at the interaction of various analytical ecosystems that span the Arrow project and how they interoperate to make the most effective use of modern hardware and cloud resources.

SPEAKER BIO: Can Efeoglu is Director of Product at Dremio, where he leads various product initiatives. Dremio is a data-as-a-service platform that empowers data consumers to discover, curate and accelerate any data regardless of its source, volume, or structure. Prior to joining Dremio two years ago, Can held product management roles in several companies in the Bay Area.
