What Is Big History? - Article Discussion

Details

We'll get together on Zoom to discuss David Christian's seminal paper, "What is Big History?"
What is Big History? | Journal of Big History (villanova.edu) https://jbh.journals.villanova.edu/index.php/JBH/article/view/2241

When reading the article, consider the following questions.

- How well does/can Big History serve as an origin story for humanity, and in what ways does/will it differ from traditional origin stories in providing a unifying vision for the global community?
- What are some limitations to the idea of Big History?
- How does Big History challenge traditional historical disciplines, and what role does it play in bridging the gap between the humanities and the natural sciences?
- Which is better for reaching knowledge and wisdom, specialization/fragmentation or universalism/unification?
- Given the interdisciplinary nature of Big History, what areas of knowledge should a Big Historian familiarize themselves with?

If you have any aspect of the paper you'd like to discuss or diver deeper into, let me know beforehand or bring it up during the discussion.
