Day hike the Pu'u Wa'awa'a Ahupua'a Trail (Cinder Cone)

Details
Let's hike the Pu'u Wa'awa'a Ahupua'a Trail. We'll meet around 10:00 am on Saturday at the second parking lot, where the trail starts.
This is a moderately difficult hike because it is a continuous elevation gain and a grade of about 12% for the first half of the hike, but the roads are fairly well kept. Round trip it should take about 3 hours, but I would plan for four hours with rest and a snack at the top.
Dog Friendly Hike
Don't forget MOISQUITO protection and at least 2 liters of water.
Round Trip Mileage: about 7.5 miles with an elevation gain of 1900 ft. This hike begins about two thousand feet above sea level, so it's a bit cooler. Bring lots of water (around 2L per person), wear sturdy shoes, and bring a snack or lunch for the top. Rain or intense sun are possible, so please be prepared.
Getting to the Trailhead: Traveling from either Kailua-Kona or Waimea town on Hwy. 190, find the turn for the trailhead between the 21 and 22 mile markers (closer to the 21 mile marker). Coming from Kailua you will see a 35 MPH market ahead sign and you turn right after that into the gate. Drive along a white pipe fence and shortly find a metal gate. Go through the gate (this area is still used for grazing stock). The gate is unlocked daily from 6am - 6pm. Stick to the left as the toad forks and proceed to the second parking area. We will meet at the second or upper hunter check in station.
