Green Sands Beach Hike - Papakolea

Green Sands Beach; we have about a 5 mile RT hike to the beach. We'll spend an hour or so exploring/swimming (at your own risk) and having lunch. There is absolutely no shade along the way so it can be hot.

Bring a light lunch/snack, sun protection, mosquito spray, at least 2 liters of water.

Ocean is usually rough in this area, swim at your own risk.

Papakōlea Beach (also known as Green Sand Beach or Mahana Beach) is a green sand beach located near South Point, in the Kaʻū district of the island of Hawaiʻi. It is one of only four green sand beaches in the world, the others being Talofofo Beach, Guam; Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island in the Galapagos Islands; and Hornindalsvatnet, Norway. It gets its distinctive coloring from olivine sand eroded out of the enclosing volcanic cone.
