4 WD on Maunakea

This is a 4x4 ONLY, road. Starting at the Hunters check-in station off the Old Saddle Road, we will traverse the R-1 road for several miles and then take side roads up to about 11,000 feet adjacent to some huge pu'us (Cinder Cones) on the SE flank of the mountain.
I must emphasize, you must have a 4x4 truck, Jeep or SUV to do this adventure. Don't assume any other vehicle is capable of getting through.
We will drive often in 4WD LOW up sometimes steep and rough roads through some of the most desolate, Mars like landscape you have ever seen.
Bring along sunscreen, lunch, refreshments and/or water. You will also want some colder weather clothes as it will be cold. Recently, there was even snow along this road so be prepared.
We may stop several places for short hikes to overlook some spectacular views of our island. so DO BRING HIKING SHOES.
