ADVANCE NOTICE FOR END NOVEMBER
Come and join a Bike Leichhardt classic! This is a fun, scenic tour to visit the mountains and hopefully get some great views. You're welcome for one or both days. Distances are not huge but it's VERY HILLY. However there is no hurry and we will wait for slower riders. At the moment there is no track work planned for this weekend so there are bail out points at every village along the line if you want to take the train. This could change.
Day 1 (Saturday) - 40km
Meet outside Royal Hotel, Springwood, opposite the south (shops) side of the Station. We'll start at 9.30am (train from Central departs 7.54 am arrives 9.12 am, arrive earlier for a coffee/pastry) then cycle to Katoomba, avoiding the highway as much as possible. It's mostly uphill, riding through Woodford, Hazelbrook, Lawson, Wentworth Falls and Leura, to our destination in Katoomba.
Coffee at Lawson, lunch at Leura. and a celebratory drink at Echo Point. BYO or buy. Toilets/water at Springwood, Lawson, Wentworth Falls, Leura.
Day 2 (Sunday) - 60km
An 8.30am start from outside the YHA will see us retrace our steps to Springwood, then continue to Penrith, via the Lennox Bridge at Glenbrook. We drop 1000m in altitude so it's mostly (but not all!) downhill. Lunch options are limited and it may be wise to bring a snack. Regular trains from Penrith.
Please note that about 10km of this ride, in both directions, is along the Great Western Highway with very fast flowing and sometimes erratic traffic. There is a good shoulder for most (but not all) of the way. There are a couple of tricky sections and great care is required.
Accommodation in Katoomba - this is "do it yourself" and there are plenty of places. YHA has been popular in the past.
Dinner Saturday night - we will probably eat at the Family Hotel in Katoomba but will reconfirm closer to time. Or do your own thing.
Suitable for fit riders very confident in traffic, with plenty of gears, or who have an eBike. You will need to carry water, repair kit, your personal possessions, and be prepared for any weather.
Ride will be cancelled if very hot or wet, so please make sure you have a flexible accommodation booking. Riders must be financial members of Bike Leichhardt.
