Great Emu in the Sky
Details
It’s been nearly a year since Bike Leichhardt visited the $5.3 billion Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, the first major international airport built in Australia in over 50 years. The runway and terminals are all but completed, but the best part is there’s a fabulous new bike path on the M12 to the airport.
From Penrith Station we will ride 20 km to Luddenham for an early coffee, then take the new Emu Bike path past the new airport, before picking up the M7 bike path past Wylde Mountain Bike Park and finishing at Rooty Hill Station for a return train to Sydney (4 trains per hour, stopping at Burwood).
You will need a bike in good working condition, helmet (of course), spare tube for punctures.
BRING PLENTY of water, OPAL card for the train and snack/lunch as there are not many options en route. (Or buy at Luddenham cafe) We can refill Water bottles at Wylde Mountain Bike Park.
Distance approx. 53 km – medium pace, flat–ish... with undulating terrain on M7 return path. Suitable for fit riders; 99% on cycle paths.
MEET at Penrith Station 09:35 (southern side in Jane Street) after the arrival of the T1 train departing Central 08:26 (Platform 18) or Strathfield 08:41 (Platform 6).
It may be necessary to change trains at Parramatta - MAKE SURE you check before boarding.
Riders must be financial for this year. First time riders please contact ride leader before attending - you may have a trial ride with us before joining ($10 a year)
