Martinez to Sacramento, train back

Details

• What we'll do
Join me as we explore the regions beyond the bay, navigating our way to Sacramento for a grand adventure. Our ride will pass through / along Martinez, Benicia, Fairfield / Mankas Corner, Vacaville, Winters, Davis before finally winding up in Sacramento where we will return via Amtrak. This is an 80 mile ride, testing your endurance, patience, and navigation. We will stop for a quick meal at Kountry Kitchen in Winters. Because this is a long ride, and I have never ridden it, please no beginners. I know most participants in this group are experienced also, so I'm looking forward to a nice ride without having to worry about bikes or bodies breaking down.

I expect everyone to maintain a ride pace of 12 mph or greater, with short rest stops every 30-45 minutes. Therefore I budget approx. 9 hours ride time to cover the 85 miles, and 4 hours for the train ride back, the ride / drive back to your home, plus stops to fix flats, purchase food, beer and snacks. We will be taking the 7:35 p.m. train from Sacramento. So you should not expect to get home before 10 p.m. See info below re: train schedules from Sacramento.

Elevation gain is about 2,000, which is not too bad. Jeff T. recently scouted this route (thanks Jeff!), and reports it's quite scenic and nice. Here is the map I've cobbled together: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27142990

WE WILL GATHER IN FRONT OF MARTINEZ TRAIN STATION AROUND 9 A.M. If you want to do this ride w/out carpooling, the Capitol Corridor arrives from the east bay in MTZ at 9:01 a.m. Unfortunately that is not an option if you live in San Jose (first train from SJO arrives in Martinez at 10 a.m.) Here is the Amtrak / capital corridor train schedule: https://www.capitolcorridor.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Train_Schedule_Nov2017_Weekends.pdf

Road conditions vary. It's all asphalted, as far as I can tell (I have done a lot of research using google street view.) Some stretches north of Benicia are pretty rugged with a lot of patches and some potholes. At the end, I'd like to visit the Fieldwork Brewing Company, if all goes well, for a celebratory drink. I realize that is an "aspirational goal" given that we have a lot of distance to cover and a schedule to keep. :-)
