About us
The Billy DeFrank Center is part of the fabric on The Alameda and throughout the County with people coming to play Rainbow Bingo on Wednesdays, participating in the ‘Vintage means Valuable’ vibrant older adult 50+ group, and hosting Gaymes in the Queer Library attracting large numbers of younger queer, trans/nonbinary, gender fluid folks. The Center embraces a large number of discussion and leadership groups, and diverse social activities and special events.
To this day, the Billy DeFrank LGBTQ+ Community Center is recalibrating how to serve the community and allies The Center continues to be a beacon of hope, a 3rd Place where you get to be who you really are.
For more information, please visit defrank.org.
The Billy DeFrank Center is still asking for proof of vaccination for all in person events at the Center. Masks are optional.

Free HIV testing at Billy DeFrank
Billy DeFrank LGBTQ+ Community Center, 938 The Alameda, San Jose, CA, USThe AACI Hope Program at the Billy DeFrank Center offers a rapid test that uses an oral swab (no needles, no blood!) and results are available in approximately 20 minutes. You can choose between Anonymous (no ID required, results delivered verbally) and Confidential (valid state ID required, written results provided).
Testing is available Mondays 4PM - 8PM, except on Public Holidays.
Please bring photo identification if you want confidential testing (written results provided). Upon entering the Billy DeFrank building, inform the front desk volunteer that you are interested in receiving an HIV test and they will direct you to the AACI HIV testing room. Though the test itself takes just a few minutes, each test counseling session lasts approximately 30-40 minutes (some people have more questions than others). There is no counseling time limit per person.
Our services are provided to the community for free.

Billy DeFrank LGBTQ+ Community Center, 938 The Alameda, San Jose, CA, USEver thought about how you’d love to have a warm and relaxing place to discuss queer fiction? Well, Billy’s Book Club is just the place, and we’d love to have you!
Billy’s Book Club is a queer fiction focused book club that plans to meet every First Thursday at 7PM at the Billy DeFrank Center.
Hosted by Lilith (they/them) and Frankie (they/them). We hope you can join us for some great discussions on a wide variety of queer fiction and to be nice and cozy amongst like-minded queer book lovers!
We will be meeting on August 7th to discuss “This is How We Lose the Time War”, written by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. A sapphic love story between two soldiers on the opposite sides of a war across time and space!
