Keto diets are all the rage. The ketogenic, or keto, diet is a very low-carb, high-fat diet that shares many similarities with the Atkins and low-carb diets. It lowers blood sugar and insulin levels, and shifts the body’s metabolism away from carbohydrates and towards fat and ketones. Research is showing ketosis might be the “secret sauce” and science behind paleo, low-carb and other popular weight-loss approaches. The problem is ... most fail at it. But you don't have to.
Numerous studies illustrate the benefits of a ketogenic diet, including:
- Losing up to 3 times more weight than traditional low fat diets
- Improved triglyceride and HDL cholesterol
- Lower blood sugar with improved insulin sensitivity
But it’s not easy. Online information about keto can be contradictory. Macro (net carb, protein, and fat) trackers recommend intake levels that aren’t consistent with the 75% fat, 20% protein 5% net carbs keto formula. Then there’s also variations on the standard ketogenic diet, including cyclical (5 keto days and 2 high carb days), targeted (add carbs around workouts), and high protein (60% fat, 35% protein, 5% carbs).
