“Managing Complexity: An Interdisciplinary Perspective on Bioinformatics Project Management”

Abstract

Bioinformatics is located at a critical interdisciplinary crossroads, where biomedical research, data science and information technology merge to form a single discipline focused on advancing the understanding of disease prevention and cure. At this crossroads the major, translational, and transformative biomedical advances are being made in curing the diseases of today and tomorrow.

Attain (http://attain.com/)manages large and complex programs, and day-to-day is involved in meeting and overcoming obstacles by leveraging interdisciplinarity and managing programmatic and technical complexity with tailored project management. In this talk, Attain offers its view at the bioinformatics crossroads, with reflections from our work at the NIH and observations as to challenges, common failure modes, what has worked and what has not worked in supporting its Government clients in their mission to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability.

“Patients & Big Data: Partnering to Move Research Forward”

Abstract

Applications of big data in heath are rapidly evolving, and the methods of assessing, integrating, and interpreting health data are becoming increasingly complex. Big data in health is a means to very important ends—the ultimate goal is to harness the potential of this knowledge to positively impact patient health outcomes and care. Big data in medicine is patient data, so patient participation is vital to creating beneficial and patient-centered research initiatives.

Big Data for Patients (BD4P) is an educational program developed by the Reagan-Udall Foundation (RUF) for the FDA. BD4P was created to fill critical scientific and technological knowledge gaps, helping to empower patients and give them a voice in health data research, policy, and funding decisions. Given the high profile of health research and programs using big data, as well as the growing efforts to make healthcare and medical research more patient-centered, it is critical that patients have a voice and active role in these endeavors.

BD4P will facilitate meaningful participation by providing patients with basic scientific literacy in big data topics and equipping them with the necessary skills and tools to become active and engaged partners in health research and big data programs. See more at: http://bit.ly/1HkhSOq
