Four Mile Hike at Fortune's Cove Preserve (Lovingston)
Details
Join me for a beautiful early spring hike at Fortune’s Cove Preserve, a stunning nature conservancy tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains near Nellysford.
We’ll tackle the Yellow and White Trail Loop — a 3.8-mile circuit with 833 feet of elevation gain through this protected natural area. The trail winds through forested ridgelines with lovely views and peaceful terrain, making it a satisfying challenge that’s accessible to hikers with a moderate fitness level.
What to expect:
This is a loop trail, so we’ll finish right where we start. Expect some climbing, rocky sections, and the kind of quiet beauty that makes the Blue Ridge so special. Late March should bring early spring wildflowers and fresh mountain air, a perfect way to kick off the season!
What to bring:
Hiking boots highly recommended, layers (mornings can still be chilly in March!), water, and a snack or trail lunch. Trekking poles also recommended for steeper sections.
Pace: Moderate, social pace — no one gets left behind.
Parking: Meet at the Fortune’s Cove trailhead parking area (coordinates 37.78031, -78.89292). The drive from Richmond is about 1 hour 40 minutes.
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just getting started, this is a welcoming group and a gorgeous trail!
Dogs are not allowed on the hike due to this being in a conservation area.
After the hike we can relax at Lovingston Winery for a flight and pizza!
